first_imgExports from the Caribbean and Latin America have increased For the first time in four years exports from the Caribbean and Latin America have increased. In the first quarter of 2017, the value of exports increased by 17 percent, following a decline of 2.9 percent in 2016. The recovery was primarily driven by a rebound in commodity prices, according to an analysis conducted by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) using detailed data from 25 regional countries.“The trend reversal is positive news for Latin America and the Caribbean. Yet, in the current context, one should not overestimate the drivers of this export expansion, which remains unstable and still restricted to a few regional economies,” Principal economist of the integration and trade sector at IDB, Paul Giordano, said. Funding available to boost local small business exportslast_img read more

TT environmentalists probe oil spill

first_imgOil spill probeThe Environmental Management Authority (EMA) of Trinidad and Tobago says it is investigating an oil spill that has been spreading across Trinidad’s western coast on the weekend. The agency is appealing to persons with information to assist in the determination of the cause of, and those responsible for, the spill.Environmental nightmareEnvironmentalist and head of the Fisherman and Friends of the Sea (FFOS), Gary Aboud has described the oil spill off the coast of Chaguaramas as an “environmental nightmare” warning it poses a serious threat to both marine and terrestrial ecosystems.“The tide has changed but some of the residual oil remains in the bay. Fish can’t live in that, this is a national park, a Chaguaramas national park,” Aboud told reporters, dipping his hand into the sea to show the magnitude of the oil spill.Big ships discard waste“Every week the big ships discard their waste oil from their bilges and this is what we get,” Aboud said, adding that he feared that such widespread spillage could severely affect local fishing grounds placing consumers at risk of illness. He said that the spill should serve as a wakeup call to those in authority to implement proper legislation and policies as well as stiffer penalties for companies that disregard environmental safety and best practices. The EMA said it was also appealing to people with any information to come forward as investigations continue in identifying the potential source of the oily substance.Aboud also told reporters that “every year the Chaguaramas area suffers from massive oil spills, and no one has ever been prosecuted or fined.”last_img read more

Guyana’s Jagdeo issues warning on 2020 elections

first_imgGuyana’s opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo has warned of “consequences” that could seriously “disrupt the kind of peace that we have now” if the 2020 general and regional elections are rigged resulting in the incumbent A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) administration of President David Granger being re-elected to office. There’s be consequences “There will be consequences if they think that they can rig the elections and have the kind of peace that we have now, they’re wrong; very, very wrong. I hope they are not thinking that in their calculation,” Jagdeo told a news conference.“I am making it clear about that and it is not coded language,” said Jagdeo, a former head of state, adding “the nature of the struggle changes. He told reporters “when you have a legitimate government, a government you accepted as legal there are acceptable forms of struggle. You know you can protest peacefully, you can go to the parliament, you use the rules.“But if they don’t live by the rules, they come to power without observing the rules then the other side should not be bound by any rules because it is a freedom struggle. It changes from struggle within a democracy, an established democracy to one of fighting for freedom…”Preparing to launch challengeThe statement by Jagdeo comes as the main opposition People’s Progressive Party (PPP) gears up to challenge the ruling of Acting Chief Justice Roxanne George-Wiltshire, who earlier this month dismissed an application that had called on the High Court to declare that the appointment of retired Justice James Patterson to chair the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) violated the constitution and is “accordingly unlawful, illegal, unconstitutional, null, void and of no effect.”last_img read more

AUDIO: MFM Coach Banks On Divine Intervention To Win NPFL Title

first_imgTechnical Adviser of title-chasing MFM FC Fidelis Ilechukwu has stated that his side needs divine intervention to claim the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) title on the final day of the current campaign. The Olukoya Boys sit second on the NPFL standings with 62 points from 37 matches, just a point behind league leaders and title-favourites, Plateau United, heading into the last Match Day of the 2016/17 season on Saturday.MFM intends to beat El Kanemi Warriors in Maiduguri on Saturday while hoping that Rangers will defeat Plateau United in Jos, so they can claim a first-ever NPFL crown. But in an exclusive chat with www.busybuddiesng.com, Ilechukwu is refusing to accept that his side’s destiny is not in their hands.“If my destiny is not in my hands, why am I a member of Mountain of Fire and Miracles ministries?” Ilechukwu asked rhetorically. “Why are we praying, why are we shaking our heads when we are praying? So it doesn’t matter.“What happened to MFM Football Club is like a miracle. Nobody believed it would happen.“To me as head coach of MFM Football Club, our technical and tactical ability is not enough. It’s all about God’s grace and God’s grace can still make everything change for our good. That’s my belief.”Already guaranteed runners-up in the NPFL this term and a spot in next season’s CAF Champions League in only their second season in the topflight, ‘The Working One’ as Ilechukwu is fondly called, says MFM see themselves as ‘Champions’ even if they fail to win the title on Saturday but warned that the race is not yet over.“It’s a great one (for us) if at the end of the day we didn’t win the league. But to me, we are champions. We are champions already because we have gotten a continental ticket (CAF Champions League). We are champions; the boys and the management are celebrating.“I still believe that the league is still open. I told (Kennedy) Boboye (coach of Plateau United) that ‘you must not rejoice until after our game against El Kanemi and after their game against Rangers’ because to me, the league is still open.”To snatch the title on the final day, MFM will have to do what 18 other clubs have failed to do this season, that’s defeat El Kanemi Warriors in Maiduguri and pray that Kennedy Boboye’s Plateau United drop points in Jos against Rangers. However, the 39-year old gaffer believes he has a formidable squad capable of doing the unthinkable.“As far as MFM is concerned, there’s no tough team in the NPFL because we are the toughest. We are the best!“The most important thing is that the rejected stone is now the chief cornerstone. That’s number one.“And we are going into that game (against El Kanemi Warriors) with the intention of winning the league; which I know is very, very possible because who knows, Rangers may draw against Plateau United and MFM can win. It is possible,” he said.MFM FC are only in their second season in the Nigeria Professional Football League after gaining promotion to the topflight two years ago.Audio Playerhttps://www.busybuddiesng.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/Ilechukwu-September-6.mp300:0000:0000:00Use Up/Down Arrow keys to increase or decrease volume.Audio Playerhttps://www.busybuddiesng.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/Ilechukwu-2-September-6.mp300:0000:0000:00Use Up/Down Arrow keys to increase or decrease volume.Audio Playerhttps://www.busybuddiesng.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/Ilechukwu-3-September-6.mp300:0000:0000:00Use Up/Down Arrow keys to increase or decrease volume.Relatedlast_img read more

You’re A Clown – NBA Player Blasts Trump

first_imgThe outburst from Beal is coming on the back of President Trump’s controversial comments at a rally on Friday where he said that players who demonstrate or kneel while the national anthem is being sung should be fired.Trump said: “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now.”“Out. He’s fired. He’s fired.” he added. In response to Trump’s comments, a lot of NFL players locked arms, knelt or didn’t even come out for the national anthem during Sunday’s games. Bradley Beal, a Washington Wizards player in the NBA, has blasted American president Donald Trump over his recent outbursts against the NFL and its players.Speaking earlier today, Beal referred to Trump as a clown adding that the job of the president is to bring people together rather than cause disunity.https://twitter.com/SInow/status/912344789496078337In his words, Beal said: “To me, you’re a clown.” “That’s unacceptable. That’s not what a leader does. Your job is to bring people together. Everyone in the world feels like since you’ve got in office that hasn’t been the case. There’s a lot of issues going around in the world — like Puerto Rico doesn’t have water or power, like they are still a part of the U.S. — but you’re worried about guys kneeling during the national anthem.“If you actually look at the reason that they’re kneeling versus your own personal pleasure, then you’ll fully understand it. But until you do that, then you’re not going to understand it. I disagree with what he’s doing, I disagree with his thoughts. Hopefully as a nation we can come together and better understand what’s really at stake here and the disasters that are going on in everyday life.” he added.
