a time of 3 minutes 4155 seconds Saturday night before the Australian women capped the first night of swimming with a world-record victory in the 4×100 freestyle relay Sun finished second After the preliminaries Horton was asked about a reported incident between him and Sun at the practice pool earlier in the week The Aussie said Sun “splashed me to say hello and I didn’t respond because I don’t have time for drug cheats” In 2014 Sun served a three-month suspension for using a banned stimulant “The last 50 meters I was thinking about what I said and what would happen if he gets me here” said Horton who beat Sun by just 13-hundredths of a second “I didn’t have a choice but to beat him” Horton was asked by a Chinese reporter why he described Sun that way Rio 2016 Olympics: Mack Horton Sun Horton celebrated his victory without even acknowledging Sun in the lane next to him Sun made a move as though he wanted to congratulate Horton but the winner looked the other way They got out of the pool together but acted as if the other didn’t exist “I don’t think we need to care too much about what the Australian says” Sun said through a translator “I’ve got a gold medal (from 2012) and my world ranking I don’t need to prove myself anymore” Still Sun defended himself after the race “I am clean” he said “I’ve done whatever it takes to prove I’m a clean athlete” Horton and Sun finally gave each other a begrudging handshake on the medal stand but that was about it Sun described the last four years as being “tough” in part because of mistakes he’s made In November 2013 he was caught for the Rio Olympics which begin on Friday (Source: AP) Top News Worried about possible terrorist attacks at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro Brazil’s government is working closely with American law enforcement and intelligence services to identify threats and thwart potential disasters at the Games Despite its notorious battles with violent crime Brazil has largely been spared the kind of brazen terrorist attacks that have rattled much of the world in recent years with Brazilian officials long playing down the nation’s vulnerability to homegrown extremism But jihadists are calling for mayhem at the Olympics building on a wave of killings in Europe the United States and elsewhere over the last year including the massacre of 130 people in Paris and “lone wolf” attacks inspired by the Islamic State that has raised broad fears about Brazil’s security preparations for the Games American officials have been training Brazilian antiterrorism units on chemical and biological attacks They are helping to identify soft targets like restaurants night clubs and shopping malls that are away from well-guarded Olympic sites And they have been working for many months to train Brazilian law enforcement and military personnel at large American sporting events including the Super Bowl in February The co-operation reflects a notable thaw in ties after the anger in 2013 over American surveillance of Brazil’s political leaders by the National Security Agency And the shift came into sharp relief last month when Brazilian investigators revealed that the FBI had helped them identify and track several of the 10 men arrested on suspicion of planning attacks for a Brazilian Islamist militant group called the Defenders of Shariah “The Americans are playing a key role in homing in on areas that we need to examine” said Rafael Brum Miron a prosecutor in the southern city of Curitiba “I don’t know how the FBI got their intelligence but it turned out to be a very valuable lead” Fears of terrorism are common before any Olympics But the frequency of recent attacks around the world — and Brazil’s relative inexperience in grappling with terrorism — have led to a sense of urgency in Rio For weeks the Islamic State has been translating its core propaganda into Portuguese and advertising that it needs Portuguese speakers in what analysts fear is an attempt to recruit and create a network in Brazil to strike around the Olympics Jihadist outlets have been increasing calls for attacks On July 19 a channel titled “Inspire the Believers” on Telegram an encrypted phone app advised that “Lone Wolf from anywhere in the world can move to Brazil now Visas and tickets and travel to Brazil will be very easy to get in sha Allah” The channel then went on to offer 17 suggestions for attacks around the Olympics mentioning American British French and Israeli visitors as targets It noted that attackers could drop “poisons or medicines” into food and drinks or use “toy drones with small explosives” according to SITE Intelligence Group which monitors jihadist communications channels 1972 Games massacre The same channel had already suggested taking inspiration from the 1972 massacre of Israeli athletes during the Munich Olympics Such messages come on the heels of the founding of a new group in Brazil claiming to be made up of Brazilians that pledged allegiance to the Islamic State’s leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi About a year and a half ago the State Department’s Bureau of Diplomatic Security which has taken the lead in protecting American athletes abroad expanded its footprint in Rio to begin preparing for the Games The Brazilians have managed big international sporting events before including the 2014 World Cup Still what the bureau initially found was a bit troubling as it quickly identified several soft spots in Brazil’s security according to senior American officials The Brazilians appeared to have little training in how to deal with attacks involving biological or radiological materials Brazilian counterterrorism operations also seemed to lack enough agents while security experts argued that legislation to detain and prosecute suspects on terrorism charges lacked teeth The United States offered training to the Brazilians who were more open to American help than from recent Olympic hosts like Russia and China Dozens of Brazilian officials law enforcement officers and military personnel flew to the United States Several attended events like the Super Bowl and the United States Open golf tournament to observe how the United States manages security at such high-profile contests Still some American officials worried that Brazil was not taking the threat seriously enough Trying to avoid taking sides in foreign conflicts including those in the Middle East has been a pillar of Brazilian foreign policy Some political leaders here contend that doing so could make Brazil a target for Islamist militant groups But the assessment of Brazil’s vulnerability began to change around the end of last year American officials and Brazilian security analysts said as the Islamic State continued to show that it could carry out and inspire attacks in different parts of the world In March President Dilma Rousseff signed antiterrorism legislation that enhanced the government’s authority to arrest and jail people suspected of planning attacks Human rights groups criticized the law as being too broad but Ms Rousseff a leftist who was imprisoned as a youth over her involvement in a guerrilla group resisting the military dictatorship signed the law despite fears that it could be used to infringe on civil liberties “There is increasing awareness in Brazil of the threat of terrorism and we are pleased that Brazil passed a new counterterrorism law in March” said Liliana Ayalde the American ambassador to Brazil “The legislation has opened up new channels of cooperation between our two governments” For all the latest News The drugs testing system imposed on Russia following revelations of widespread doping is inefficient and the country must be part of the decision-making process to battle the problem Russia’s outgoing Olympic Committee (ROC) chief has said Alexander Zhukov said in a speech released on Wednesday that while doping was a problem in Russia there was no such thing as a state-backed doping system which the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) said it had uncovered in the country “There is no state-supported doping programme in sport in Russia and it has never existed” Zhukov told the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Lausanne The WADA-commissioned reports including one by Canadian lawyer Richard McLaren revealed widespread state-sponsored doping in Russian sport WADA also alleged that Russian testers had helped local athletes at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics by changing drugs-tainted samples for clean ones with the aid of the secret service to give their competitors an advantage The results triggered a ban on all but one Russian track and field athlete at the Rio de Janeiro Games in August and widespread calls for a blanket ban on all athletes until the country could prove it had a clean drug-testing system Zhukov said Russia needed a stronger presence within WADA and that the suspended anti-doping authority RUSADA had to be in charge of testing again WADA wanted a blanket ban on Russian athletes in Rio but the IOC allowed more than 270 Russians to compete at the Games FOREIGN TESTERS With RUSADA suspended foreign testers have been put in charge of sample collection and testing in the country However Zhukov said this was ineffective claiming the limited number of testers were unable to process enough samples “How is WADA planning to solve this when even right now they say that the UK Anti-Doping Agency which is entrusted with all the powers can hardly manage to analyse 6000 samples let alone a larger quantity which is required for us” Russia and WADA have been at odds throughout the scandal with the latter blaming Russian hackers for leaking the details of therapeutic use exemptions (TUEs) which allow athletes with medical conditions to take otherwise banned substances The TUE details relating to several high profile athletes including Britain’s Tour de France cycling champions Chris Froome and Bradley Wiggins and tennis grand slam winners Serena Williams and Rafa Nadal were leaked in September Zhukov said rules regarding TUEs should change with too many athletes requesting them “It is pure nonsense when athletes with serious at times even chronic illnesses become Olympic champions and medallists by taking substances which are prohibited for other athletes” Zhukov said “It happens with increasing frequency and becomes common practice Soon healthy athletes at competitions will become an exception Should we really accept this” Zhukov is leaving the ROC to focus on his other job as first deputy speaker in the lower house of the Russian parliament For all the latest Sports News download Indian Express App More Top NewsWritten by Nisha Nambiar | Pune | Published: April 30 2016 11:25 am The museum before Independence was referred to as the Lord Ray Museum Top News Pune prime’s tourist location the 130-year-old Mahatma Phule Museum on Ghole Road housed on two acres of government land with 25000 sq feet of construction area may finally see an expansion and facelift with its ‘occupants’ being evicted from the government property as per the orders issued by the district administration on April 26 For the last 11 years the museum had accommodated a private trust by the name of Aikya Bharati Pratisthan on its premises that had promised to start language classes for students The trust was given ‘occupancy’ based on mere goodwill because the government land cannot be leased out They were merely asked to give donation for the upkeep of the museum With the museum falling under the ambit of chairmanship of Pune Divisional Commissioner the then Divisional Commissioner Bapusaheb Karandikar had agreed to give the Trust some space totally on goodwill However over the years the museum administration wanted the Trust out of its premises so that they could expand the museum The museum—which before Independence was referred to as the Lord Ray Museum and presently under the Pune Municipal Corporation renders itself as an exceptional platform for exchange of information and knowledge— houses artefacts textile items handicraft items armoury arms and several items related to forestry agriculture geology as well as natural history After India achieved Independence the management and ownership of this museum fell under the ambit of the state government It was renamed as Mahatma Phule Vastu SanghralayThe exhibits in Mahatma Phule museum comprise stone carvings brassware items marble statues as well as oil paintings Museum administrator Rajeev Vilekar said that for many years they have been looking at expansion and even carrying out various activities that would bring about necessary cultural and educational exchange However there was space constraint “The occupants—the trust— had promised to start something on national integration of languages but there was no progress on that front Also we had demanded for a donation for the upkeep of the museum but that too the Trust has been defaulting for the last three-and-a-half years This is why we wanted our space back and now that we have it we can look for further expansion” he said Resident Deputy Collector Rajendra Muthe said they had given the necessary notices for eviction for the occupancy and the final order was issued and the space evacuated on April 26 “We have followed all the due procedures of the government’’ he said However the Trust in-charge Durga Dixit an academician has contended this eviction order She has said that she was not given enough time to get a stay order and even as she was ready to give the pending amount the museum authorities were refusing to give her receipt “I will contend the same to higher authorities’’she added For all the latest Pune News dead of night on December 27 It is to be substituted with Shahajis statue One of the reasons for the NCPs strong reaction is that it has been humbled by the Congress in both Lok Sabha and assembly elections in 2009 That humiliation continues: several projectssuch as Lavasalinked to Pawar or his family have been under the scanner of the Central government for violating norms By shifting Konddeos
