Newcastle United 0-1 Everton: Tom Cleverley heads Toffees to win in injury time

first_img1 Everton players celebrate Tom Cleverley’s goal Tom Cleverley was the hero for Everton on Boxing Day as his header in the final minute of stoppage time gave them a 1-0 win over Newcastle United at St James’ Park. The Toffees looked likely to be heading to stalemate on Tyneside with Magpies goalkeeper Rob Elliott in magnificent form once again, but his clumsy punch at the death allowed ex-Manchester United man Cleverley to loop a header home from near the edge of the box.Steve McClaren will be rueing a string of wasted chances in the second half which could have seen his side victorious but now see his side slip back into the relegation zone.It was an exciting affair on Tyneside and the Toffees looked bright from the off with Kevin Mirallas, making a rare start, going close twice and Romelu Lukaku forcing saves from Rob Elliot, who was the Magpies’ man of the match last week against Spurs. There was also a certain amount of festive feistiness on show as Daryl Janmaat and Gareth Barry were both booked and the former was lucky to remain on the pitch as he also shoved a rampaging Ross Barkley to the deck in a rather obvious foul. The game was seriously lacking in the final third after the restart, Lukaku was denied again by Elliot before the goalkeeper pawed away a snapshot from Aaron Lennon.Attempting to inject something special into the game, Roberto Martinez replaced Ross Barkley with Gerard Deulofeu after 69 minutes but it was Newcastle who nearly opened the scoring as Ayoze Perez dragged a shot just wide. And two minutes later his strike partner Aleksandar Mitrovic should have found the back of the net with a powerful header but he directed it just wide of the post with Tim Howard rooted to the spot, although the American did then save well from Georginio Wijnaldum. But it was Everton who were to have the final say as Cleverley, who has come back from injury in recent weeks, won them the match late on, moving them up to ninth in the Premier League table.last_img read more
