first_imgBy Dialogo August 07, 2009 Former world boxing champion Oscar de la Hoya will fight in an exhibition bout in Panama City in September, the organizers of the event announced. Proceeds from the bout will go to the fight against cancer. The event will take place as part of the “KO Drugs Festival” to be held in Roberto Durán Arena, in the Panamanian capital, on 5 September. On the same program, Panamanian Luis ‘El Nica’ Concepción and Mexican Omar Salado will fight for the World Boxing Association (WBA) interim flyweight title. De La Hoya, the only boxer in history to win six titles in different divisions, will return to the ring for a two-minute exhibition bout against WBA executive vice-president Gilberto Jesús Mendoza, the sports executive himself told AFP. “The Panamanian public will have the opportunity to see De la Hoya in the ring for the last time,” Mendoza said. According to the organizers, the ‘Golden Boy’ will donate all proceeds from the evening to the National Association against Cancer in Panama, which will also receive the proceeds from an auction of items donated by other world champions. The organizers hope that during his stay in Panama De la Hoya will meet with the president of the country, Ricardo Martinelli, as well as other government officials, and that he will be able to visit a hospital. De La Hoya is expected to arrive in the country on 3 September aboard a private flight.last_img read more
